Buthay Court
Buthay Court is named after the nearby medieval site of butts used for archery practice. The Court is situated in the Market Town of Royal Wootton Bassett and consists of 8 apartments.
Wodetun was the first known settlement at Royal Wootton Bassett, recorded in Malmesbury Abbey charters dated 681, 745 and 937. In the Domesday Book of 1086 it was recorded as ‘Wodetone’, a possession of Milo Crispin. This Saxon name literally meant ‘the farm in the wood’, referring to Braden Forest, a former royal hunting forest that was largely cleared in the 1630’s, but still exists in part today. The Bassett family became the Lords of the Manor in the thirteenth century, giving the town the second part of its name. It was at this time, in 1219, that the first market charter was granted to the town.
